Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared a quirky incident that made him ponder a serious issue – deepfakes – during a speech at a BJP event. These are akin to digital magic tricks in which technology can make someone appear to do or say something they never did. Consider them as videos or photographs in which AI is used to replace one person’s face with that of another – a high-tech impersonation.

PM Modi is concerned about how these deepfake tricks can cause trouble and confusion in our society. He recently saw a video of himself performing garba, a traditional dance he hasn’t done since elementary school. What’s the catch? It was all a ruse. He is worried that these videos will cause chaos by convincing people of events that never occurred.

Imagine watching a video of a friend doing something embarrassing, but it isn’t real. Worse, what if political leaders are caught on camera saying things they never said? Deepfakes can be used to deceive us, which is why the Prime Minister warns us to be cautious.

The PM suggests that, similar to how cigarette packs contain health warnings, deepfake videos should include a label indicating that they are not genuine. It’s his way of saying, “Hey, be cautious – not everything you see is true.”

Celebrities all over the world are dealing with fake videos. This has been a problem for Indian actors such as Rashmika Mandanna and Kajol. To address this issue, the Indian government has requested that social media platforms act quickly and remove misleading content.

The message from the Prime Minister is clear: don’t believe everything you see on the internet. Deepfakes may appear genuine, but they can cause significant harm by disseminating false information. So, the next time you see a video that seems too good or too strange to be true, keep in mind that it could be a digital trick. Stay vigilant and informed!
