PM Modi Visits Ukraine: Inclinations Peace Amid Zelensky’s Call for Support
PM Narendra Modi made a noteworthy visit to Kyiv, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since its independence in 1991. The visit, which took place amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, was a significant moment in India’s diplomatic relations with the war-torn country. Modi, who has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict, reiterated India’s commitment to peace during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Arriving early in the morning, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai.” He paid floral tributes at a statue of Mahatma Gandhi and underscored India’s position on global conflicts, stating, “India’s position is very clear—this is not a time of war. This is a time to come together to tackle the challenges that pose a threat to humanity.”
Dialogue and Diplomacy: India’s Neutral Stance
During their one-on-one talks, PM Modi emphasized India’s neutral position in the ongoing conflict while also offering assistance to end the war. He stressed that India has never been neutral in its support for peace, saying, “We side with peace.” Modi has been consistent in his call for dialogue and diplomacy since the conflict began in 2022, and he reaffirmed New Delhi’s readiness to contribute proactively to peace efforts.
The meeting between the two leaders resulted in the signing of four agreements focused on cooperation in agriculture, medicine, culture, and humanitarian aid. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted that the subject of India’s energy trade with Russia was also discussed during the talks.
Zelenskyy’s Plea: “We Need India on Our Side”
President Zelenskyy expressed his desire for India to take a more assertive position on the conflict, urging New Delhi to move beyond what he termed a “balancing act.” He stated, “I think that India has begun to recognize that this is not just a conflict, this is a real war of one man—Putin—against the entire nation of Ukraine. You are a big country with significant influence, and you can stop Putin and his economy.”
Despite Ukraine’s criticism of Modi’s recent visit to Moscow, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy acknowledged the importance of India’s role in global diplomacy. He called on India to use its influence to help end the conflict.
PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine follows his earlier meeting with Zelenskyy at the G7 summit in Italy, where he emphasized India’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution. India has maintained balanced relations with both Ukraine and Russia, continuing trade with Moscow while providing essential aid to Ukraine.
The visit concluded with Modi presenting Ukraine with four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita, and Maitri) cubes containing medical supplies for emergency care, symbolizing India’s humanitarian support.
