Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Kuwait on Saturday, marking the first trip by an Indian premier to the Gulf nation in over 40 years. The last such visit was by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981, with then Vice President Hamid Ansari visiting in 2009. During his stay, PM Modi will engage with Kuwait’s top leadership, including the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister, to discuss trade, investment, energy, culture, and people-to-people connections.

At the Amir’s invitation, Modi’s agenda also includes a visit to a labor camp housing Indian workers, addressing an Indian community event, and attending the Gulf Cup football tournament’s opening ceremony. The ‘Hala Modi’ event will be held at the Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Sports Complex, as reported by ANI.

Ahead of the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted its significance in “opening a new chapter” in India-Kuwait relations. Secretary Arun Kumar Chatterjee noted that discussions on a bilateral investment treaty and a defense cooperation agreement are ongoing.

The trip is also expected to strengthen ties between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), chaired by Kuwait. The GCC, comprising nations such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, accounted for $184.46 billion in trade with India in FY 2022-23.
