Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to preside over a virtual G20 leaders’ summit on Wednesday evening, marking an unusual follow-up to the in-person meeting held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 9-10. The virtual gathering aims to deliberate on the implementation of the Delhi Declaration, capping India’s G20 presidency, which concludes this month.
Sherpa Amitabh Kant, in a media briefing on Tuesday, noted that the virtual summit is expected to attract a similar level of global leader participation as the earlier physical meeting. The decision to hold a virtual summit after the in-person gathering is deemed “exceptional” and “very rare,” highlighting the commitment of G20 nations to translate the guidance provided during the physical summit into concrete actions for a more just and equitable world.
The primary focus of the virtual summit is to provide momentum for the implementation of the Delhi Declaration, which received unanimous agreement from all G20 members during the 18th G20 leaders’ summit in September. Kant emphasized that the declaration underscored the commitment of G20 leaders to addressing global challenges in an ambitious, inclusive, decisive, and action-oriented manner.
In a statement during the closing session of the New Delhi summit on September 10, Prime Minister Modi announced the hosting of a virtual summit. Invitations have been extended to leaders of G20 nations, including the chair of the African Union, nine guest countries, and heads of 11 international organizations.
Speaking on the matter on November 6, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stressed the need to maintain momentum on the policy guidance outlined in the New Delhi Declaration by engaging with G20 nations. She quoted Prime Minister Modi’s call for a fundamental mindset shift to benefit humanity as a whole during India’s G20 presidency.
India has held the G20 presidency since assuming office on December 1, 2022, and will continue to be part of the top troika when Brazil assumes the presidency next month, with South Africa following Brazil. The G20, comprising 19 countries and the European Union, represents over 85% of global GDP, more than 75% of global trade, and approximately two-thirds of the world population. The troika during the Brazilian G20 presidency in 2024 will consist of India, Brazil, and South Africa.
The virtual summit is seen as a pivotal step in advancing the goals outlined in the Delhi Declaration and reinforcing international economic cooperation to address pressing global challenges.
