A day after the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections recorded a 59 percent voter turnout, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a public rally in Srinagar on Thursday, September 19. This rally is a key part of the BJP’s efforts to boost support for its candidates in the Kashmir Valley, where the party has never secured a seat before.
Of the 47 assembly seats in Kashmir, the BJP is contesting 19, which is fewer than in the 2014 elections. The rally, expected to attract 30,000 attendees, will take place at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar. Security has been tightened across Srinagar and Kashmir, with increased patrols and checkpoints to prevent any security issues, according to police officials.
Following the abrogation of Article 370, the BJP saw some success in the District Development Council (DDC) elections, with three candidates winning from Srinagar, Pulwama, and Kupwara districts, giving the party hope for improved electoral prospects in the Valley. This rally follows PM Modi’s recent address in Doda, marking the first time in 42 years that a prime minister visited the area.
The Srinagar rally will be his second during the ongoing assembly elections. In the first phase of voting on September 18, a record 59 percent turnout, the highest in seven elections, was observed. Around 2.3 million voters participated, deciding the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 independents. Kishtwar district saw the highest turnout at 77 percent, while Pulwama recorded the lowest at 46 percent. Polling took place at 3,276 polling stations across seven districts, with additional stations set up for migrant Pandits in Jammu, Udhampur, and Delhi. Minor incidents of scuffles were reported, but there were no serious events requiring a repoll.
