Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Cyprus’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, on Monday. The award bears the name of Makarios III, the founding father of the Republic of Cyprus, who led the country’s transition from British colonial rule.
Archbishop Makarios Marg Gains Spotlight
The award has brought attention to Archbishop Makarios Marg, a short, tree-lined stretch in central Delhi, named after Makarios III in the 1980s. The road was previously known as Golf Links Road but was renamed in tribute to international leaders aligned with India’s vision during the 1983 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit hosted in Delhi.
Historical Significance
The road’s renaming reflects India’s deep commitment to NAM and its solidarity with world leaders who stood for decolonization and sovereignty. Makarios III was a freedom fighter and central to Cyprus’ struggle for independence.
Shared Diplomacy
The award ceremony highlights the historical thread between Nicosia and New Delhi, woven through shared diplomacy and NAM. Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the President and people of Cyprus, dedicating the award to the historic friendship between the two nations.
