PM Modi Launches Delhi-Meerut RRTS Stretch, Opens New Era of High-Speed Regional Transit

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13-kilometre segment of the Rapid Regional Transit System (RRTS) today, connecting Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to New Ashok Nagar in East Delhi, according to officials. This milestone links Delhi with the NCR city of Meerut, as per the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency overseeing the project. Following the inauguration, PM Modi travelled on the newly launched section from Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar. The stretch opened to the public at 5 PM.

“With this launch, RRTS trains have now reached Delhi, introducing a new era of high-speed regional mobility and enhancing connectivity in the national capital. From 5 PM today, Namo Bharat trains will run every 15 minutes for public use,” said Puneet Vats, spokesperson for NCRTC. The RRTS trains, branded Namo Bharat, have standard coach fares ranging from ₹20 to ₹150, while premium coach fares range from ₹30 to ₹225.

Currently, a 42-kilometre portion of the RRTS corridor, stretching from Sahibabad to Meerut South in Uttar Pradesh, is operational. With the addition of the Delhi section, the total operational length has extended to 55 kilometres. “The commencement of this section now directly connects Meerut city to Delhi via Namo Bharat, cutting travel time by two-thirds. Commuters can journey from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South in under 40 minutes,” Vats explained. The entire 82-kilometre corridor, extending from Jangpura in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, is expected to be fully operational by mid-2025.

The Uttar Pradesh segment of the transit system is entirely elevated, while half of the 13-kilometre Delhi stretch inaugurated today is underground, marking the first underground section of the RRTS.

New stations are equipped with dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones, wheelchair-accessible ramps, spacious lifts, and tactile pathways for visually impaired passengers. “Each train includes a reserved coach for women, with additional reserved seats for women, elderly passengers, and Divyaangjans. Wheelchair and stretcher spaces have been allocated in all trains. Emergency panic buttons are installed inside the trains and on platform screen doors to enhance passenger safety,” an official added.
