On October 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed India’s unwavering commitment to leaving “no stone unturned” in its quest to host the 2036 Olympics, expressing a strong desire to host the world’s premier sporting event. Mr. Modi inaugurated the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where India is set to unveil its blueprint for hosting the quadrennial extravaganza.
This marks the first IOC session held in the country in four decades, with the last one taking place in 1983 in New Delhi. In addition to the 2036 Olympics bid, Mr. Modi also announced India’s aspiration to host the 2029 Youth Olympics.
“Indians are fervently enthusiastic about hosting the Olympic Games, and we pledge to spare no effort in organizing the 2036 Olympics,” Mr. Modi declared during his address to the IOC Session delegation and numerous distinguished guests at the Jio World Convention Centre.
“This dream resonates with the 1.4 billion Indians, and we aspire to make it a reality with your unwavering support. Our readiness to host the 2029 Youth Olympics is a testament to our commitment, and I am confident that India will receive steadfast support from the IOC,” he added.
In his speech, the Prime Minister underlined the significance of sports in India’s rich heritage, noting that nearly every festival in the country is intertwined with sports. “The spirit of sports transcends boundaries,” PM Modi emphasized, “In sports, there are no losers—only winners and learners. Sports empower humanity, and every record-breaking achievement is celebrated by all.”
IOC President Thomas Bach began his address with a warm ‘namaste’ and welcomed the Indian PM, acknowledging India’s economic and sporting progress. Bach praised India’s remarkable performance in the Asian Games, highlighting the nation’s inspiring trajectory in the sporting arena.
He underscored the importance of including e-sports in the Olympics program, emphasizing the need to connect with the mindset of young individuals and empower them. Bach also delved into the role of artificial intelligence, revealing the formation of an AI working group and promising further details during the 141st IOC Session to be held over the next two days.
He stressed that artificial intelligence and e-sports represent two novel opportunities for the Olympic movement and predicted the profound impact of artificial intelligence on future Games, stating, “The 2024 Paris Olympics will mark the transition into the AI era, leaving the pre-artificial intelligence epoch behind.”
