Patna: A 31-year-old woman, Belmati Devi, was arrested on Friday for allegedly poisoning her 35-year-old husband, Jitendra Manjhi, to death in the Khiri More police station area of Patna district.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by her in-laws at the local police station. After being produced in court, Belmati was remanded to judicial custody.
Khiri More Station House Officer (SHO) Praveen Kumar stated that Belmati confessed to poisoning her husband’s food, citing years of verbal and physical abuse as her motive.
Manjhi became ill after consuming the poisoned meal, experiencing severe stomach pain and vomiting. He was first taken to the subdivisional hospital and later referred to Patna Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
Belmati initially fled the scene but was apprehended from an acquaintance’s house in the area. “She admitted to poisoning his food and has been sent to jail,” said the SHO.
The couple, married since 2017, had three children. However, their relationship deteriorated after two years, as Manjhi, a habitual drinker, frequently assaulted his wife. Belmati reportedly sought to end the abuse by killing him.
