A Punjab court sentenced self-proclaimed Christian pastor Bajinder Singh to life imprisonment on Tuesday in a 2018 rape case, just days after his conviction.
Singh, often called the ‘Yeshu Yeshu prophet,’ was found guilty last Friday of sexually assaulting a woman from Zirakpur. The case traces back to 2017 when the complainant, a Punjab resident, accused Singh of sending her unwanted messages after she began attending his church.
Initially remaining silent due to fear, she later filed a complaint, leading to his arrest in July 2018 at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport while attempting to flee to London.
Singh has previously faced legal troubles, including a sexual harassment case filed in February by a 22-year-old woman. She alleged he inappropriately touched her inside a church cabin and threatened her family. A day after his conviction, two more women accused Singh of sexual abuse and exploitation at his dera. They met officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, who urged the Punjab government to ensure their safety and take strict action.
The women claimed that despite FIRs being registered, police inaction left them vulnerable to threats. One of them, who appears in a viral video allegedly showing Singh assaulting someone, revealed she had attended his church for over a decade and was involved in seva at his dera for six to seven years. Speaking to the media, she expressed hope after meeting the Jathedar, stating that while some people supported them, others ignored their pleas.
Following these allegations, the Akal Takht secretariat condemned the delayed action against Singh. The Jathedar praised the victims for their bravery, assured them of full support, and encouraged them to trust in Guru Sahib.
