Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is confronted with potential setbacks as the International Cricket Council (ICC) hints at revoking the hosting rights for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains steadfast in its stance, refusing to tour Pakistan due to security concerns, a decision that could lead to significant changes in the tournament’s hosting landscape.
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, has firmly stated that the Indian team won’t travel to Pakistan without government clearance, maintaining a stance that Pakistan needs to meet stringent security standards. This refusal by India to tour Pakistan for international cricket events, exemplified by the recent absence in the Asia Cup 2023, has raised concerns for the Champions Trophy’s prospects in Pakistan.
Previously, the PCB’s ex-boss, Ramiz Raja, expressed dismay at India’s decision, suggesting reciprocal measures by not sending the Pakistani team to India for the World Cup. However, despite these statements, Pakistan participated in the World Cup held in India, indicating a deviation from the initial stance.
Fearing a repetition of the previous scenario, PCB anticipates a potential relocation of the tournament or adopting a hybrid model if India declines to tour Pakistan. The shift could see the tournament being held in the UAE entirely or follow a split format, with some matches played in Pakistan and others in the UAE, with India avoiding fixtures in Pakistan.
During discussions with the ICC executive board, PCB highlighted the uncertainty surrounding India’s visit for the Champions Trophy 2025. The board emphasized that unilateral decisions by the ICC concerning the tournament must be avoided, asserting that proper compensation should be provided if BCCI refuses to tour Pakistan.
PCB outlined the successful tours of Australia, England, and New Zealand to Pakistan in recent years, underscoring the absence of security issues during these visits. They urged the ICC to address the situation if India’s matches are relocated to another country, stressing the need for appropriate compensation to Pakistan.
The Champions Trophy, making a return to the ICC roster after eight years, holds substantial significance, featuring the top eight cricketing nations. Pakistan, as the reigning champion from 2017, seeks to host this prestigious tournament, but uncertainties around India’s participation loom large, potentially altering the event’s landscape.
