Pakistan’s Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed the 71st case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in 2024, according to Geo News.
The recent case was a child from Jacobabad, Sindh, who first showed symptoms on December 27, 2024. This is the fifth case from Jacobabad, highlighting the persistent challenges in the country’s fight against polio.
WPV1 cases in 2024 in Pakistan have reached 71, with Balochistan reporting the highest number at 27, followed by 21 cases each in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Punjab and Islamabad have reported one case each.
NIH officials reiterated that polio remains a debilitating disease with no known cure and stressed the importance of vaccination. “Multiple doses of oral polio vaccine and completing the routine immunisation schedule for children under five years of age are essential to developing immunity against this devastating virus,” a senior health official told Geo News.
Parents are asked to ensure their children under the age of five must receive the vaccine, as vaccination is the most effective defence against the virus.
On January 10, the NIH confirmed another separate case of WPV1 in a child in Karachi’s East District. Although it was reported in early 2025, the case was included in the 2024 count because the sample was collected in December 2024.
The rising number of polio cases in Pakistan is a serious concern, as Pakistan is one of only two countries in the world where polio is still endemic, along with Afghanistan. Regardless of global eradication efforts, several challenges, such as security concerns, vaccine hesitancy, and misinformation, are hampering progress in eliminating the disease.
