P.V. Narasimha Rao, M.S. Swaminathan, and Charan Singh were Honored with India’s Highest Civil Award
In a single year, the longest list of Bharat Ratna recipients has been announced, including former Prime Ministers P.V. Narasimha Rao and Choudhary Charan Singh, and the Father of the Green Revolution M.S. Swaminathan. This adds to the two awardees announced earlier this year, which include the socialist leader Karpoori Thakur and Former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani.
Narasimha Rao was a distinguished scholar and statesman whose significant measures opened India to global markets, enhancing economic development. The Janata Party PM Singh championed the farmers’ cause while Swaminathan was the late pioneer of the Green Revolution.
The Bharat Ratna is India’s highest civil honor. The highest number of awardees announced was in the year 1999 with 4 recipients. This record has now been broken with the announcement of a new list this year with one more awardee which also includes Advani, 96, the only person who has been awarded in his lifetime.
