Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly stereotyping Muslims during a recent speech in Rajasthan. According to the news agency PTI, Owaisi accused Modi of spreading misinformation and using divisive rhetoric.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Purnea, Bihar, Owaisi responded to Modi’s remarks where the Prime Minister appeared to criticize “those who have more children.” Owaisi pointed out that Modi himself comes from a large family and questioned why this was being used to target Muslims. He noted that AIMIM’s Bihar chief, Akhtarul Iman, who is contesting from Kishanganj, comes from a Muslim-majority region.
Owaisi claimed Modi’s statements were inaccurate, emphasizing that the fertility rate among Muslims is declining, with official data showing it at 2.36%, compared to a lower rate among Hindus. He accused Modi of using divisive language and dog-whistling against Muslims while presenting a different image during international visits.
He also criticized Modi’s use of the term “ghuspaithiye” (infiltrators) to describe certain groups, suggesting that it was an insult to the people living in Seemanchal, a region near the borders with Bangladesh and Nepal. Furthermore, he pointed out that the government has failed to provide data on illegal immigrants, despite the term being used frequently in political discourse.
Owaisi cautioned that Modi’s divisive comments could fuel regional tensions, especially between southern states with lower population growth and northern states with more representation in Parliament. Despite these criticisms, AIMIM plans to contest over a dozen seats in Bihar’s upcoming elections.
