‘Outstanding’ Leader Li Keqiang Will be Cremated by China on Thursday
China will burn the ashes of former Premier Li Keqiang in memory of an “outstanding” leader as flags fly at half-mast across the country on Wednesday, as reported by news agencies. Li, a reformist leader and prolific economist who served as the state’s prime minister for ten years until his resignation in March, passed away on Friday due to a heart attack. Xinhua has announced that direct flights will be operated from Shanghai to Beijing on that day.
Quoting the Communist Party of China, “He was hailed as a dedicated CPC member, a time-tested and loyal communist soldier, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, a politician, and a party and national leader,” Xinhua stated on Tuesday. National flags will be flown at half-staff at the Great Hall of the People, the Foreign Ministry, Tiananmen Square in the capital, local government offices, and embassies across the country on Li’s funeral day, as per Xinhua.
Li’s official obituary, published by Xinhua last week, expressed deep sorrow on the part of the Communist Party and the country over his passing. However, analysts and diplomats have noted that Li, previously considered a potential candidate to lead the Communist Party, has been sidelined as President Xi Jinping has consolidated his control over economic policy.
