In a significant move to curb unlawful and obscene content, the Indian government has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including popular names like Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) emphasized that these platforms have been found in violation of various laws, including the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
Banned OTT Platforms:
- Ullu: Known for its explicit content, Ullu has been a subject of controversy in the past.
- ALTT: Another popular platform, ALTT has been banned for violating Indian legal and cultural standards.
- Desiflix: This platform has also been blocked for its obscene content.
- Other banned platforms: Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, Triflicks.
Government’s Action:
The government’s decision to ban these OTT platforms is a step towards enforcing digital content regulations and ensuring adherence to Indian laws. The MIB has directed ISPs to disable or remove public access to these websites within India. The Department of Telecommunications has also been intimated to facilitate compliance by ISPs.
Supreme Court’s Stance:
In April, the Supreme Court responded to a petition calling for a ban on sexually explicit content on OTT and social media, stating that it’s not their domain to take action. However, the Justices highlighted the need for executive action, and the Solicitor General indicated existing regulations and further measures under consideration.
Impact:
The ban on these OTT platforms is expected to have a significant impact on the way digital content is regulated in India. The government’s move is seen as a step towards protecting Indian citizens from obscene and unlawful content.
