A group of prominent Indian opposition leaders received alerts from Apple on Tuesday, warning of potential “state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise” their iPhones. Those who received the notifications included Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, and other Congress members, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and several others.
The controversy gained momentum as it was revealed that the alerts were sent to individuals from various opposition parties. In response, Apple issued a statement saying that it did not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker, and they may be false alarms.
The Indian government has expressed concern over the matter and ordered a thorough investigation. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw rejected allegations of government snooping, stating that Apple’s alerts were vague and issued in nearly 150 countries. He assured that a technical investigation would be conducted by Cert-In, the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents.
Opposition leaders have raised concerns about privacy and democracy. Rahul Gandhi criticized the government, saying, “You can do as much (phone) tapping as you want, I don’t care.” He also mentioned the Adani issue, alleging that power lies elsewhere.
Apple’s notifications to these politicians have raised questions about cybersecurity and potential state-sponsored threats. The government’s response and the outcome of the investigation will be closely monitored in the coming days.
