In a dramatic turn of events, the Opposition INDIA bloc, comprising various political parties, has announced its decision to persist with its disruption strategy in both houses of Parliament. This move comes as a response to the recent security breach incident that occurred earlier in the week, resulting in a complete washout of parliamentary proceedings for the third consecutive day.
The INDIA bloc, led by its floor leaders, took a firm stance on Friday, demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach. The disruption strategy is a manifestation of their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the incident and their insistence on accountability.
The trigger for the ongoing protests was the punitive action taken against 14 MPs, including one from the Rajya Sabha, in the aftermath of a ruckus caused by the security breach. The Opposition argues that the suspension of MPs challenges their parliamentary duty, intensifying their call for Shah’s resignation.
The Opposition parties have criticized Shah for addressing the security breach at a media conclave without making a statement in Parliament during the ongoing session. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh asserted that the government is responsible for the parliamentary stalemate, alleging an attempt to divert attention from questions raised by INDIA bloc parties regarding the role of BJP’s Lok Sabha member Pratap Simha in issuing passes to individuals involved in the December 13 incident.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the government’s response to the security breach, acknowledging the security lapse. He emphasized the role of the probe committee in ensuring a thorough investigation and bringing the guilty to justice. Shah accused the Opposition of playing politics on a serious issue of national security.
In a related development, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chairman of the Rajya Sabha rejected the Opposition’s demand to suspend the scheduled business for an immediate discussion on the security breach. This decision triggered strong protests from Opposition members, leading to repeated adjournments.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court has sent Lalit Jha, the alleged mastermind of the Parliament security breach, to seven-day police custody. Four other accused had been remanded to seven-day police custody on Thursday in connection with the same case.
The ongoing parliamentary turmoil reflects the heightened tensions and deepening rift between the government and the Opposition, raising concerns about the effective functioning of the legislative body.
