The second phase of voting for 26 seats across six districts in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections began on Wednesday, September 25, and will continue until 6 pm. Security has been heightened in critical constituencies like Rajouri, which, along with Poonch and Reasi, has experienced an increase in terror attacks in recent years.

In this phase, over 2.5 million voters will determine the fate of 239 candidates, including 79 in Jammu’s Pir Panjal region. This is the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade, following the abrogation of Article 370. The first phase of voting took place on September 18 across 24 constituencies in seven districts, according to the Election Commission of India.

The third phase is scheduled for October 1, with the vote counting set for October 8. The first phase saw a voter turnout of 61.13 percent, with voting held in 24 constituencies across seven districts. One of the prominent candidates in the second phase is the National Conference’s Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from two seats—Ganderbal and Budgam. Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party chief Ravinder Raina is running from Nowshera in Rajouri, a seat he has held for the past decade.

The Election Commission has established 157 special polling stations, including 26 ‘pink polling stations’ managed by women, 26 polling stations managed by specially-abled persons, 26 run by youths, 31 border polling stations, 26 green polling stations, and 22 unique polling stations. During a rally in Srinagar on Monday, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lost his confidence, saying, “He used to boast about a 56-inch chest, but he is not the same person anymore.” The BJP dismissed these claims as “utterly baseless” and “laughable.” The Congress and National Conference have formed an alliance, with the BJP and the PDP also playing significant roles in the elections.
