The oldest militant group in Manipur, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), signed a peace deal with the Indian government, ending decades of conflict, in a historic development. Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement, praising the accomplishment as a “historic milestone” in the effort to bring about long-lasting peace in the Northeast. Since its founding in 1964, the UNLF has played a significant role in Manipur’s turbulent history. During the 1970s and 1980s, it concentrated primarily on recruitment and mobilization. But in 1990, the group decided to use armed conflict as a tactic, creating the Manipur People’s Army (MPA). In light of the UNLF’s commitment to giving up violence and reintegrating into mainstream democratic processes, the peace agreement represents a significant milestone.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned the UNLF and a number of other extremist organizations recently, prompting the decision to start peace negotiations with the group. These organizations were linked to attacks on law enforcement, security personnel, and civilians in Manipur, putting India’s sovereignty and integrity in jeopardy. This prompted the ban. The peace agreement was signed in New Delhi, signaling a significant turning point in the modern history of Manipur. The agreement is a strategic step to address long-standing issues, promote development, and effect positive change in the region and resolve the ongoing conflict.

The UNLF, the oldest valley-based armed group in Manipur, has agreed to renounce violence and join the mainstream, announced Amit Shah. I warmly welcome them into the democratic processes and wish them the best of luck as they travel toward progress and peace.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that this is the first time an armed Manipuri group from the valley has consented to return to mainstream society by renouncing violence and abiding by the laws and the Indian Constitution. It is expected that the agreement will put an end to hostilities between the UNLF and security forces and offer a chance to address community concerns.

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goals of inclusive development and a better future for the Northeast, the peace accord is regarded as a historic accomplishment. The chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, praised the move and emphasized PM Modi’s steadfast support and vision for a more prosperous and tranquil Northeast. With over 180 reported deaths from ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, Manipur has been struggling with it. The signing of the peace agreement gives the region hope for stability and prosperity. The deal is anticipated to have wider ramifications and pave the way for a more cooperative and tranquil Northeast environment.

This signing of the peace agreement with the UNLF signifies a critical turning point in the history of Manipur, ending a protracted armed conflict and ushering in a new era of prosperity and peace for the area.
