The tragic incident occurred when the victim attempted to withdraw money from the ATM and accidentally came into contact with an exposed live wire.Amid heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal in Tamil Nadu, a tragic incident occurred in Chennai’s Muthialpet area on Saturday.
A migrant worker, Chandan, originally from Odisha, was fatally electrocuted while attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM. According to reports, Chandan accidentally came into contact with a live wire from a severed cable when he grasped an iron pole near the ATM kiosk. The damaged cable had been exposed due to waterlogging caused by the cyclone’s heavy downpour.
The impact of the shock threw Chandan onto the road. Nearby residents quickly intervened, rescuing him and rushing him to a government hospital. Unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival. His body was later found floating in the waterlogged street near the ATM, as shown in visuals shared on social media. Chandan had been working at a private showroom in Parrys and lived near Broadway in Chennai.
The Muthialpet police have launched an investigation into the incident. Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall on Saturday, caused widespread disruption, with heavy rains inundating streets, homes, and hospitals in Chennai and surrounding areas. Civic authorities have been working on a “war footing” to clear waterlogged areas.
Meanwhile, strong winds swept away barricades and umbrellas, and many road users were forced to seek shelter. Rainwater also flooded two state-run hospitals in Chromepet — a general hospital and a thoracic medicine facility — compounding the challenges faced by residents in the aftermath of the cyclone.
