Novak Djokovic into the quarterfinals, and Coco Gauff terminates Caroline Wozniacki
In a thrilling day at the 2023 US Open, tennis fans witnessed yet another stunning performance from Novak Djokovic as he secured a spot in the tournament’s quarterfinals. Meanwhile, the charismatic Coco Gauff put an end to Caroline Wozniacki’s comeback dreams on the women’s court.
In a recent match, the three-time US Open champion defeated the fifth-ranked Croatian qualifier, Borna Gojo, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Djokovic, who had to come back from a two-set deficit in his previous round, dominated the match from the outset, securing a decisive victory.
Djokovic managed to break Gojo’s serve twice in the first set. Although he had a bit of a shaky start in the second set, he recovered and secured another break in the third set to win the match comfortably, without the excitement and tension of his previous five-set win against Laslo Djere.
After finishing the game in his style, Djokovic said, “I knew that this was Borna’s big game, and I never thought we cleverly faced each other on this tour, honestly. He’s a top-notch player, has a powerful serve, a large forehand, and surprisingly good agility for his size. The crucial strategy in the match was to counter his strong serving. I’m just relieved that I won in straight sets.”
On Tuesday, the three-time US Open champion will face Fritz, a player who has never won against him in the last seven meetings, including the Cincinnati tournament last month.
Even Fritz, the Champion Djokovic, added some words: “He said that he is playing some fabulous tennis, especially on home soil (United States of America). Logically, matches get harder from here, but I’m ready. It would be a great experience.”
Fritz is the third American to reach the quarter-final after a straight-set win against Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker.
Tofes, who was seeded 10th, made it to the quarterfinals, where he will face the 47th-ranked Shelton. He reached this stage after beating Australia’s Rinky Hijkata 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
The 25-Year-Old Taiffoe will reach the semi-finals in 2022. In the Semi-finals, he was defeated by the champion, Charlos Alcaraz.
Win and Knockout from the Women’s Tennis Side
Switching to the women’s tennis side, local favorite and sixth-seeded Coco Gauff faced a challenging three-set match for the third time in four rounds this week. She managed to narrowly overcome former world number one Caroline Wozniacki with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Gauff, a 19-year-old emerging star, will now face the defending champion, Iga Swiatek, in the quarterfinals. Gauff has been on a remarkable streak, securing her 15th win in 16 matches, including titles in Washington and Cincinnati in the last month.
Despite losing two games and dropping the second set, Wozniacki, playing her first Grand Slam in over three years, demonstrated her resilience and pushed Gauff to a decisive third set.
After defeating the 33-year-old Wozniacki, Gauff paid tribute to her opponent, stating, “The level of tennis she played today was amazing, and she has been an inspiration for me since I started playing tennis.”
As the US Open of 2023 is coming to an end, the tournament continues to deliver exhilarating matches. It’s been a fantastic tournament till now; let’s see who will reach the semi-final and the Final in both sections, men’s or Women’s, and be crowned champions.
