North Korea Under Kim Jong Un: Military Shake-up and Heightened War Preparedness in Focus
On Thursday, August 10, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un changed his army’s top commander and called for further war preparations, increased weapons manufacturing, and enhanced exercises, as reported by the official media KCNA.
Kim delivered the remarks during an assembly of the Central Military Commission, which addressed proposals for responses to deter North Korea’s unnamed opponents. The nation’s highest General, Head of the Army’s General Staff Pak Su Il, was “removed,” according to KCNA, without going into any detail. He had held his current position for approximately seven months.
General Ri Yong Gil, who had previously been the nation’s defense minister and the highest-ranking commander of its conventional military, succeeded Pak.
He had formerly held the position of the military’s chief of staff. His dismissal and subsequent disappearance from official functions in 2016 generated speculations in South Korea that his execution was carried out. He resurfaced just a few months later after being appointed to a different top position.
Kim reportedly set an objective to expand weapons manufacturing capacity, but no additional specifics were provided. Last week, the commander inspected weapons companies and requested an increase in the quality of missile engines, firearms, and various other weapons manufactured.
Kim appears to be directing his focus toward Seoul and locations around the South Korean capital, as depicted in photographs posted by KCNA.
North Korea to Hold Paramilitary Parade on September 9th
The US has accused North Korea of supplying Russia with weapons during its takeover of Ukraine, including cannon rounds, rockets, and missiles. Both Russia and North Korea have vehemently refuted these charges.
Kim Jong Un also encouraged the armed forces to conduct drills utilizing the nation’s latest weaponry and equipment to keep its soldiers prepared to face conflicts.
On September 9th, North Korea will hold a paramilitary parade to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Day of the Foundation of the Republic. The nation possesses numerous paramilitary organizations that it deploys to complement its armed forces.
Both the United States and South Korea are set to hold military drills around August 21 and August 24, something that North Korea views as an invasion of its sovereignty.
