Nitish Kumar Sworn in for Ninth Time, Forms JDU-BJP Team in Bihar
In big news, Nitish Kumar, the leader of the Janata Dal (United), became Bihar’s Chief Minister for the ninth time on Sunday. He surprised everyone by teaming up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just 18 months after splitting from them and leaving the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ alliance.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar oversaw Kumar, along with BJP leaders Vijay Kumar Sinha and Samrat Choudhary, taking on new roles in the government. The first official meeting is set for Monday around 11:30 am at the state’s secretariat.
Kumar explained that issues within the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ and the broader national opposition scene led to his change. He stressed, “I was with them (NDA) before. We took different paths, but now we’re back together and sticking together.”
With 128 MLAs, the new alliance has a majority in the 243-seat Bihar assembly, beating the Mahagathbandhan’s 114 MLAs, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties.
Responding to the shift, Bihar BJP leaders have started proceedings to remove Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, linked with the RJD, showcasing the ongoing political changes.
As the new team gets ready for their first official meeting, all eyes are on who gets what roles, expected to be decided in the next two days. Also, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar plans to meet with all JD(U) MPs in Patna at 12 pm, highlighting the fast-paced political scene.
The unfolding events of the JDU-BJP collaboration, along with changing alliances, are set to shape Bihar’s political future in the coming days.
