New Delhi: Women in Kolkata and across Bengal are planning a large-scale protest late tomorrow night in response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest, starting at 11:55 pm, is being described as “For Women’s Independence on the Midnight of Independence.” Protest locations are being circulated on social media, with additional spots being added as more people from suburban areas join in.
Many men are also planning to participate in large numbers to show their support. Notable figures, including actors Swastika Mukherjee, Churni Ganguly, and filmmaker Pratim D. Gupta, have encouraged people to gather at the most convenient meeting points.
Kolkata has been deeply disturbed by the rape and murder of the young doctor, who was discovered dead on Friday morning in a seminar hall at the state-run hospital where she was on night duty. Her body showed signs of severe injuries to her eyes, face, mouth, neck, limbs, and private parts. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given the city police until Sunday to complete the investigation, stating that if the victim’s family wishes, the state government would recommend a CBI probe if the deadline is not met. She emphasized that the state government has nothing to conceal.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has assured that they are interviewing everyone present at the scene at the time of the incident and is confident that any additional perpetrators will be arrested within the next four to five days.
