In a recent development, the Airbus A340, operated by Romania-based Legend Airlines and carrying 276 Indian passengers, finally landed in Mumbai early on Tuesday morning after being grounded in France for four days. The flight was en route from the United Arab Emirates to Nicaragua when it was detained at Vatry airport, approximately 150 km east of Paris, following a tip-off suggesting possible human trafficking.
The passengers were confined at Vatry airport while authorities transformed the terminal into a temporary courtroom for emergency hearings. Among the 303 original passengers, 25, including five minors, sought asylum in France, and two individuals were initially detained as part of the trafficking probe but were later released.
The departure of the plane on Monday came after a French court ruled that authorities lacked the legal authority to further detain several passengers. French authorities clarified that while no evidence of human trafficking was found, investigations into potential breaches of immigration laws are ongoing.
The Indian Embassy expressed gratitude to French officials for the swift resolution, enabling Indian passengers to return home. According to French authorities, the plane had 276 passengers when it departed for Mumbai, as 25 individuals, including two minors, expressed the desire to apply for asylum and remained in France. Two others were held, produced before a judge, and placed on assisted witness status.
When the flight landed at Vatry airport, there were 11 unaccompanied minors among the remaining 303 passengers. Make-shift beds were arranged for the stranded passengers, who were provided access to facilities such as toilets and showers, as well as meals and hot drinks in the hall of Vatry airport.
The flight, originally bound for Nicaragua, had landed in Vatry on Thursday for a technical stopover en route from Dubai when French police intervened. French authorities initiated a judicial investigation into the conditions and purpose of the trip, with a unit specializing in organized crime investigating suspected human trafficking. Nicaragua has become a sought-after destination for those seeking asylum in the US.
In related data, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indians attempting to enter the US illegally, with 96,917 reported attempts in the financial year 2023, marking a 51.61 percent jump from the previous year. A notable portion of these attempts, 41,770, occurred via the Mexican land border. Flights to Nicaragua or other third countries with easy access to travel documents have been colloquially termed ‘dunki’ flights.
The incident underscores the complexities and challenges surrounding international travel and immigration, prompting authorities to remain vigilant in their efforts to combat potential human trafficking and immigration law violations.
