New Zealand Eliminates the Last COVID-19 Limitations: “A Major Achievement”

The vaccination rates hit record highs, and most restrictions were relaxed last year by the New Zealand government. The government set plans to repeal all remaining COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday at midnight, bringing an end to the world’s extreme pandemic rules. This step comes more than three years after the original implementation of these measures.
In a statement made by Ayesha Verrall, Minister of Health, on Monday, it was stated that from Tuesday onwards, citizens would no longer be required to wear face masks in healthcare institutions or endure a seven-day isolation period after getting the virus.
“Despite ongoing fluctuations in our case numbers, the previous year’s sharp spikes in COVID-19 rates have not emerged.” Given this, as well as the population’s immunity levels, the cabinet and I have received professional information that supports the safe withdrawal of the remaining COVID-19 procedures,” Verrall stated.
The majority of the limitations were lifted last year as vaccination rates increased and the country’s healthcare system managed the winter season without being overburdened. This decision to relax the standards comes only two months before a closely engaged election.
While the worldwide community praised New Zealand’s successful pandemic management, which resulted in low infection and mortality rates, the government faced internal backlash for protracted lockdowns, school closures, and restricted borders.
The formal lifting of limitations was described by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins as a “significant milestone.”
“I’m completely convinced that New Zealanders can be immensely proud of our collective achievements. We stayed at home, made sacrifices, got vaccination shots, and without a doubt, we saved lives,” he said during his weekly news conference.
Although the requirements are no longer mandatory, the Ministry of Health advises people to stay in their homes for a period of five days if they’ve fallen ill or have been diagnosed as positive.
