Over 549 people were charged for drinking and driving between December 30-31. Drink and drive cases almost doubled over the last year. Most cases were reported in Kapashera (Southwest Delhi), followed by Nangloi, Sangam Vihar, Tilak Nagar, and Nand Nagri. Metro stations also recorded one of the busiest days, witnessing the overhaul of the passengers. Stations like Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Maidan, and Akshardham were among the busiest ones.

Delhi, on New Year’s Eve, witnessed heavy traffic congestion around areas like Kartavya Path, CP, ITO, Sansad Marg, and Red Fort. Extra force was deployed in the areas surrounding the defence colony, GK, East Kailash, Munirka, and Hauz Khas to control the traffic, added the police.

The traffic cops begin a special drive from December 16 to December 31 every year, recording the traffic offences which exceeded the number in 2023. Over 4,200 challans were issued to those involved in drinking and driving, jumping red lights, speeding, and other offences. Police said more than 10,000 personnel, including the traffic units, were deployed to maintain law and order on the streets during the time. Most cases were registered in places of South Delhi – Badarpur, Sarita Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas, Najafgarh, Punjabi Bagh, etc. The police also implemented a raise in fines hoping for a dip in the number of cases.

According to the statistics released by the traffic police, 2,120 persons were charged for drinking and driving between December 16 and December 31, 2023. The cases involving drinking and driving and other general traffic violations have almost doubled over the last year, the statistics record. Data shows that between December 16 and December 31 in the year 2022, more than 1,103 persons were charged with drinking and driving, while the number of the same offence stays at 274 for the year 2021. The data shows a huge leap in the violation of the traffic regulations recorded over the years.

A senior traffic officer in talk with the newspapers said, “We have had double the number of challans issued this year due to proactive police presence on the streets. People have been charged for improper parking, wrong-side driving, and not wearing seat belts. Traffic police were deployed around all major malls, markets, clubs, and arterial roads for traffic control.”

Traffic offences are the major reasons behind road accidents and thus need to be taken care of seriously. The data released by the traffic police suggests an overall eight-fold increase in the number of traffic challans from the previous years. In 2023, a total of 16,173 cases of drinking and driving were registered in comparison to 2,225 cases in 2022 and 2,831 cases in 2021. Alongside, 2023 records 26,008 charges for triple riding, 2,95,777 for riding without a helmet, 4,70,341 for improper parking, 59,527 for driving onto incoming traffic, and a total of 21,602 for having tinted car windows. The credit of which goes to the traffic police for their active patrolling and presence throughout the year.
