K-drama fans were blessed when the highly anticipated drama “Death’s Game,” starring Seo In-Guk and Park So-dam, finally dropped on December 15. The drama had been making buzz from the time of its announcement, for it has been adopted from a popular webtoon ‘I’ll Die Soon,’ written by Lee Won-sik and Ggulchan, which had been serialised on Naver in 2019. The storyline created by writer and director Ha Byung Hoon keeps fantastical elements with reincarnation at its core.
“Death’s Game” follows the journey of a man named Choi Yi-jae, played by Seo In-guk, who feels completely hopeless for not being able to find a job for 7 years, and on top of that, is scammed of his money by his friend. He also feels undeserving of his girlfriend because of his own insecurity, and he falls into deep despair. Believing death could be his only solace, he commits suicide but instead finds himself in a very unreal situation.
He comes across a mysterious entity who calls herself ‘Death’, embodied by Park So-dam. She is angry at witnessing his casual approach to death and also at his audacity to seek her before it is his due time. To punish him for his brazen attitude, ‘Death’ forces him to live through 12 different lives, all of which will have their impending end in horrifying deaths. During his time in that alternate life, he will not only become that other person for the time being, but the memories and abilities of the body’s original owner will also come to him. She tells him that if he can escape the impending demise in even one of his reincarnated forms, he will get to live the remainder of his life in that other body. However, if he fails in all 12 chances he gets, he will be subjected to eternal suffering and never escape from hell ever again. Thus begins a game like no other, where Choi Yi Jae is determined to triumph and avoid his trip to hell.
Park So-dam’s fans are very excited for this drama because this is her first project after her 2-year hiatus, during which she underwent treatment for papillary thyroid cancer. The drama is also causing a wave of excitement among fans because of the 10 other cast members who are to feature in the series. The series will feature famous actors like Kim Ji-hoon, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, Sung Hoon, Kim Kang-hoon, Jang Seung-jo, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Do-hyun, Go Yoon-jung, Kim Jae-wook, and Oh Jung-se, who are supposed to act as Choi Yi-jae’s reincarnated forms. Notably, “Death’s Game” might also be Lee Do-hyun’s final project before he leaves for his mandatory military service in South Korea this August.
This series is bound to be violent due to its storyline and will not be everyone’s cup of tea. However, for fans who like stories with dark themes, this one is sure to be a roller coaster ride.
The production quality of ‘Death’s Game’ is also to be remarked upon. Adapting a webtoon with a fantastical storyline is no easy task and can easily go wrong. However, the visual aesthetics and cinematography of the show seemed to enchant the audience in its own dark world.
“Death’s Game” is an original drama of TVING and is also available for streaming on its own platform and on Amazon Prime Video in selected regions. The series has been divided into two parts. Part 1 has already been released on December 15, and Part 2 will be released on January 5, 2024, at 12:00 (KST) time.
