New Gaza Ceasefire Talks Approved by PM Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to new talks about a ceasefire in Gaza. This decision comes after the International Court of Justice told Israel to make sure urgent help reaches people in Palestine quickly. But even though the United Nations Security Council resolution said there should be an immediate stop to the fighting, it still continued on Friday with even reports of fighting near hospitals.
Tensions escalated in the region as Israel reported the killing of a Hezbollah rocket commander in Lebanon, along with several Hezbollah fighters who died in strikes in Syria, which a war monitor attributed to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that discussions on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages would resume in Doha and Cairo “in the coming days.” This comes after negotiations seemed to have stalled recently.
In its order, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague said: “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but… famine is setting in.” Philippe Lazzarini, head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, posted on X that the ruling was “a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man-made + worsening”.
In January, the court ruled that Israel must allow “urgently needed” humanitarian aid into Gaza and prevent genocidal acts. However, Israel dismissed the case brought by South Africa.
The recent binding ruling from the ICJ, although lacking strong enforcement measures, coincided with Israel’s military announcement on Friday that operations in Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in the territory, were ongoing for the twelfth consecutive day.
Throughout the coastal territory, Hamas-run Gaza’s health ministry reported dozens killed overnight. Among the casualties were 12 individuals in Rafah, a southern city that has faced frequent bombings in anticipation of a possible Israeli ground operation. In the aftermath of an airstrike, men used the light from their mobile phones to rescue individuals trapped under debris, as captured in AFPTV footage.
The ICJ ordered Israel to “take all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay,” the provision of “urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance.”
