Netherlands’ Cricket Sensation: Paul van Meekeren, the Uber Eats Delivery Driver Turned Cricket Hero
In a stunning upset at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the Netherlands achieved a remarkable victory by defeating the previously unbeaten South African team. The Dutch secured their first win of the campaign in a thrilling match that saw them defend a total of 245 runs in a 43-over-per-side contest. The South African side was bowled out for just 207 runs. The victory was a collective effort, with standout performances from key players like skipper Scott Edwards, pacer Logan van Beek, and spinner Roelof van der Merwe. Among the heroes was seamer Paul van Meekeren, whose journey to this triumph is nothing short of inspiring.
Van Meekeren played a pivotal role in the victory, taking two crucial wickets, including those of Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen, which dealt significant blows to South Africa’s chase. This unexpected outcome sent shockwaves throughout the cricketing world, but it’s the personal journey of players like Van Meekeren that adds an extra layer of respect to the Netherlands’ historic win.
In a tweet from 2020, Van Meekeren disclosed that he had worked as a food delivery driver for Uber Eats after the Men’s T20 World Cup was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He shared his experience with a touch of humor, writing, “Should’ve been playing cricket today, now I’m delivering Uber Eats to get through the winter months!! Funny how things change hahaha, keep smiling people.”
In a previous interview, Van Meekeren opened up about the challenges he faced during the pandemic. With cricket on hold indefinitely, he had to seek alternative employment to make ends meet.
“I had enough savings but they’re savings that I don’t want to touch,” he explained. “But I’ve dipped so deep into my reserves now that I had to think about what I was going to do this winter because there isn’t going to be any cricket. I need some income,” Van Meekeren said.
He initially looked for a job to cover essential expenses such as petrol, food, rent, and phone bills. However, he also aimed to remain as flexible as possible in case a cricket opportunity arose, whether with the Dutch team, franchise cricket, or a chance to train with a county team.
Van Meekeren’s determination and openness about his situation have not only allowed him to return to professional cricket but also serve as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges. His rise from a chapter in his career that he once considered difficult underscores the resilience and commitment displayed by Dutch cricketers on their journey to success.
