In a significant move, Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), in partnership with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ruling Liberal Party, has launched a campaign to seek “official recognition” of the ‘1984 Sikh genocide’ in the country’s parliament.
The campaign, led by NDP’s party leader Jagmeet Singh, aims to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the tragic event. Singh emphasized the importance of acknowledging the genocide, stating, “On the 40-year anniversary, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP will seek official recognition of the 1984 Sikh Genocide in Canadian Parliament.”
The ‘1984 Sikh genocide’ refers to the violent riots that erupted in Delhi and other parts of India following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in October 1984.
Singh highlighted the significance of recognizing the genocide as a “direct attack on the cruel government that carried out this genocide, that this was wrong and should not have been done.” The NDP campaign also calls on the Government of Canada to formally recognize this state-organized killing spree as a genocide.
Notably, a similar motion passed by the Ontario legislature in April 2017 had strained bilateral relations between Canada and India. Singh, who was a member of the Ontario legislature at the time, had previously attempted to move a similar motion in June 2016.
Despite the potential complications in Canada-India relations, the move has been welcomed by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), with its general counsel Gurpatwant Pannun calling it “definitely a positive step.” However, Pannun suggested that recognizing the “Sikh People’s Right to Self-Determination” would be more appropriate given the ongoing Khalistan Referendum and investigations into potential links between Indian agents and the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, SFJ’s chief coordinator.
The issue of the ‘1984 Sikh genocide’ has been a contentious one, with previous attempts to bring a motion before Canada’s House of Commons failing. However, with the NDP’s latest campaign, there is renewed hope for official recognition and acknowledgment of the tragic events that took place in 1984.
