NCTE to Reintroduce One-Year B.Ed. Program
A decade after the cancellation of the one-year B.Ed program, NCTE is planning to reintroduce the one-year B.Ed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 provisions. It has come to notice that the state director of higher education has decided to offer just one format of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree for a one-year duration from the 2026–27 academic year.
The eligibility for the course has also been determined, as students completing a four-year undergraduate program or those who have completed a master’s degree will be eligible for admission. Hence, candidates with a bachelor’s degree are eligible for the two-year B.Ed program, and one-year B.Ed programs are offered only to candidates with a four-year multidisciplinary bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.
NCTE Chairman Prof. Pankaj Arora announced that the governing council has also approved the new rules of 2025. The new guidelines will replace those of 2014. Candidates who have successfully completed a four-year graduation course or have a post-graduation degree are eligible to pursue a one-year B.Ed program, as reported in TV9 Hindi.
Four-year integrated BA-B.Ed, B.Com-B.Ed, and B.Sc-B.Ed programs have been started from the session of 2023 onwards, but the new change of having a one-year B.Ed program may take time for implementation, as this framework would come after 2025. Ever since the NCTE chairman said, “These changes will be implemented before the batch of candidates for the four-year integrated degree in 2027.”
On the other hand, the director of higher education, Shailendra Deolankar, said, “A notification about these changes for B.Ed. colleges will be issued in 2025. Students who complete a four-year degree program will be eligible for admission.”
Although the official notification has not been released, the words of the NCTE chairman are enough to indicate that the one-year B.Ed. program is back on the agenda and would be reinstated from the academic session of 2026. The revival of the one-year B.Ed. program will breathe new life into this course, boosting its popularity.
