Mumbai: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Mumbai seized 74,000 illicit capsules (29.6 kg) of pharmaceutical drugs and 244,400 cigarettes linked to an international syndicate at the Air Cargo Terminal of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The operation was carried out by the NCB on January 3, according to an official press release.
The seized consignments, which were falsely declared as food items, were bound for London, UK.
Acting on intelligence about an international syndicate sourcing pharmaceutical drugs through illegal channels from India, the NCB identified two containers belonging to logistics companies—Address India and UDX Worldwide—both based in Andheri, Mumbai, as carrying the illicit goods.
After the inspection, the NCB recovered 74,000 capsules (29.6 kg) of pharmaceutical drugs and 40,000 cigarettes from the container of Address India. Meanwhile, another 204,400 cigarettes were discovered in the container of UDX Worldwide.
The manifest of both containers showed that the goods were misdeclared as food products. The seized pharmaceuticals have been secured for further investigation, while the cigarettes have been handed over to Mumbai Customs.
The NCB continues to investigate the matter, with both courier and logistics companies now under scrutiny.
