Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Islamabad as a “positive step” to ease tensions between India and Pakistan, according to PTI. Jaishankar’s nearly 24-hour trip on Tuesday, for a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, marked the first visit by an Indian foreign minister to Pakistan in nine years, despite ongoing strained relations.
In a discussion with Indian journalists, Sharif, who has served as prime minister three times and is president of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), stressed the need for both countries to engage and move forward. He praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Lahore in December 2015 but expressed disappointment over the “long pause” in bilateral ties. Sharif urged both nations to adopt a forward-looking approach and said, “We can’t change our neighbours, neither Pakistan nor India. We should live like good neighbours.”
Reflecting on 70 years of conflict, Sharif emphasized the importance of avoiding further disputes, encouraging dialogue between the two sides. He blamed former Prime Minister Imran Khan for the recent breakdown in communication, pointing to comments Khan made in 2018 that strained relations, particularly with Prime Minister Modi.
Sharif also expressed a desire to help restore ties and advocated for resuming trade and cricket between India and Pakistan as a way to rebuild the relationship. Trade between the countries has been halted since 2019, following India’s imposition of heavy tariffs on Pakistani imports after the Pulwama attack.
