Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif acknowledged on Tuesday that Pakistan had breached an agreement with India signed by him and ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999, referring to the Kargil misadventure by Gen Pervez Musharraf. He admitted fault during a meeting of the PML-N general council, where he was elected president of the ruling party six years after being disqualified by the Supreme Court.

On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests, followed by an agreement with Vajpayee, known as the Lahore Declaration on February 21, 1999, aiming for peace and stability. However, Pakistani intrusion in Kargil a few months later led to conflict.

Sharif disclosed that President Bill Clinton had offered Pakistan USD 5 billion to halt nuclear tests, which he declined, contrasting it with what he believed Imran Khan would have done. He also discussed his removal from office in 2017 and accused the former ISI chief of orchestrating it to bring Imran Khan into power.

Sharif praised his brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, for his loyalty, stating his intentions to strengthen the PML-N as its new president.
