The mother of Alexei Navalny pleaded with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to intervene and immediately release her son’s body to her, in her first comment since Navalny’s death in an Arctic prison.
Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, appeared in a video outside the Arctic penal colony where her son died on Friday. “For the fifth day, I have been unable to see him. They won’t release his body to me. And they are not telling me where he is,” Navalnaya said in the video.
“I appeal to you, Putin. The resolution to this matter lies solely with you. Let me finally see my son. I demand that Alexei’s body be released immediately so that I can bury him in a humane way,” she said in the video, which was posted on social media by Navalny’s team.
Russian authorities have said the cause of Navalny’s death is still unknown and have refused to release his body for the next two weeks as the preliminary inquest continues, members of Navalny’s team said, also accusing the government of stalling to hide evidence.
On Monday, Navalny’s widow, Yulia, released a video accusing Vladimir Putin of killing her husband and said that the refusal to release the body is part of a cover-up. Navalny’s mother and her son’s lawyers went to law enforcement agencies and the morgue where the body is believed to be kept in the Arctic region but were not able to get them to turn it over or say where exactly it is kept.
The Russian government also initiated a new criminal case against Navalny’s brother, Oleg Navalny, on Tuesday, the TASS news agency reported. TASS did not mention which article of the criminal code the case has been opened under but said that the police were searching for him.
