NATO Chief Urges China to Halt Support for Russia’s War Effort in Ukraine
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg delivered a stern message to China, urging Beijing to cease its support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine if it wishes to maintain positive relations with the West. Stoltenberg, speaking during a visit to Berlin, highlighted China’s crucial role in bolstering Russia’s war economy by supplying high-end technology, including semiconductors.
“China says it wants good relations with the West. At the same time, Beijing continues to fuel the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War Two. They cannot have it both ways,” Stoltenberg cautioned.
He warned against Western nations becoming overly reliant on China, drawing parallels to past dependence on Russian oil and gas. Stoltenberg emphasised the need to avoid similar vulnerabilities by reducing dependencies on Chinese money, raw materials, and technologies.
China has deepened its trade and military cooperation with Russia as the United States and its allies imposed sanctions on both countries, particularly targeting Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. Trade between China and Russia surged to a record $240.1 billion in 2023, with Chinese exports to Russia soaring by 46.9%.
The upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in May underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations. However, Stoltenberg’s remarks highlight the diplomatic challenges China faces in balancing its relations with Russia and the West amid the conflict in Ukraine.
