National Sports Day: Govt Determined to Help Sports and Sportspersons, Says PM Modi
National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of the legendary Major Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Center is committed to promoting sports in the country. His energetic and upbeat address was both a tribute to the sporting heroes of the country and an assertion of the government’s continued commitment to developing the sporting prowess of the nation.
Honouring Major Dhyan Chand
Modi began his speech by paying homage to one of the all-time sporting legends of India: Major Dhyan Chand. Nicknamed “The Wizard” for his extraordinary skills on the hockey field, Major Dhyan Chand has inspired millions of people for generations. Modi mentioned that he was a symbol of good luck for Indian hockey, having won three gold medals in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. His achievements have elevated him to the status of the nation’s most accomplished athlete. PM Modi said that the saga of Major Dhyan Chand still inspires new sportsmen to take up athletics as a profession. “On National Sports Day, tributes to the legendary Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose magic with the hockey stick inspires generations,” Modi tweeted, calling on the next generation to draw inspiration from the passion and dedication displayed by him in the field of sports.
Support of Sports by the Government
PM Modi, during his speech, focused on the government’s commitment to building sports infrastructure and providing all the necessary institutional and financial support to athletes. The Prime Minister once again emphasized that sustained effort and investment in this direction are putting India on track to becoming a global athletic power. He spoke about the contribution of schemes like the Fit India Movement and the Khelo India Project, both of which have been successfully popularizing sports and fitness activities.
Modi said the whole sports ecosystem of India has gradually started to change. “The government is doing all it can to ensure that our sportspersons get the best possible facilities to compete at the highest levels,” he said. He further stated that India believes in the capability of its sportspersons, as they represent the country with aplomb in various international competitions, and the Central government is increasingly supportive of them.
Nurturing Sports Culture
Prime Minister Modi also spoke of the need to encourage a sports and fitness culture at the local level. He called upon the youth to participate in sports for developing resilience, teamwork, and leadership qualities, apart from keeping them healthy.
