Nation Mourns as Industrialist Ratan Tata Passes Away at 86; State Funeral to be Held in Mumbai

Indian industrialist Ratan Naval Tata, credited with transforming the Tata Group into a globally recognized conglomerate, passed away at the age of 86, the company announced late Wednesday. Tata had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Mumbai hospital, where his condition was described as “critical.”

“It is with a profound sense of loss that we say goodbye to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader,” the Tata Group said in a statement on X. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed his death late Wednesday, calling Tata a “friend, mentor, and guide.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu led the nation in paying tribute to the former Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group. Modi, referring to Tata as a “visionary,” shared on X, “I would often meet him during my time as Gujarat CM, and we exchanged views on many topics. I found his insights deeply valuable. Our conversations continued in Delhi. Deeply saddened by his passing. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also offered their condolences, reflecting on Tata’s values and contributions. Several chief ministers, actors, politicians, and business leaders have continued to express their grief and share memories of Tata.

The Maharashtra government declared Thursday, October 10, as a day of state mourning in his honor. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata would be given a state funeral, with all national flags across government buildings flown at half-mast, and all government events in Mumbai cancelled.
