A 40-year-old English teacher from a prominent Mumbai school was arrested on Saturday under the POCSO Act. She was allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student multiple times over a year. The accused, a married mother, taught the Class 11 boy. And reportedly became infatuated with him during preparations for the school’s annual function in December 2023. Police said she first made advances in January 2024.

When the boy resisted and avoided her, she enlisted a female friend—unaffiliated with the school—to persuade him. The friend, now also charged, allegedly told the minor that relationships between older women and teenage boys were “common.” And he and the teacher were “meant for each other.” After this call, the student agreed to meet the teacher, who then took him to a secluded spot in her car, forcibly undressed him, and assaulted him, police revealed. She later gave him anti-anxiety pills when he showed signs of distress. Her car has since been impounded.

The abuse escalated, with the teacher allegedly taking the boy to luxury hotels in South Mumbai and near the airport, plying him with alcohol before encounters. The school, which boasts several notable alumni, has been shaken by her arrest. She remains in police custody until Wednesday.

The victim’s family noticed behavioral changes but initially stayed silent, hoping the abuse would stop once he graduated. After passing his board exams this year, the boy fell into depression. The case was filed when the teacher allegedly tried contacting him again through a domestic helper, prompting the family to act.

Police have charged the accused under POCSO Act sections 4 (penetrative assault), 6 (aggravated assault), and 17 (abetment), along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act.
