The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is set to make a friendly visit to North Korea on Tuesday, June 18. This will be Mr. Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years.

This rare visit by Mr. Putin highlights the growing friendship between the two countries. Both nuclear-armed states are meeting exactly nine months after Kim Jong Un’s visit to the Russian Far East last September, where Mr. Putin hosted Kim.

Putin’s visit to one of the world’s most reclusive countries comes as he seeks ammunition support from North Korea to continue his military campaign, which was launched in February 2022. Since then, Moscow has faced global isolation.

“At the invitation of the Chairman of State Affairs of the DPRK, Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin will pay a friendly state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on June 18-19,” the Kremlin announced.

After visiting Pyongyang, Mr. Putin will visit Vietnam on June 19 and 20.

The West has accused North Korea of providing weapons to Russia for use in the Ukraine war, violating UN-imposed sanctions on North Korea. Although North Korea has denied all accusations, United Nations monitors have confirmed that one of the ballistic missiles fired from Russia at a Ukrainian city was provided by North Korea. Ukraine has claimed that nearly 50 such missiles were supplied by North Korea to Russia.

“The list of countries willing to welcome Putin is shorter than ever, but for Kim Jong Un, this visit is a victory,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. This visit will not only elevate North Korea’s status among countries worldwide but also bolster Kim’s legitimacy.

“The visit should not result in more military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow in violation of UN resolutions,” stated the South Korean ministry.

Russia has clearly stated that it will continue to cooperate and upgrade its ties with North Korea and other allied nations as it sees fit, and it will not heed instructions from other countries, least of all the United States.
