Moradabad: Woman and Friends Kill Cat, Set It on Fire for ‘Bad Fortune’
A woman in Uttar Pradesh, along with her friends, killed a cat and set it on fire, believing it brought misfortune by crossing their path.

A woman and her friends in Moradabad’s Bhojpur area allegedly killed a cat and set it on fire, believing it had brought them misfortune by crossing their path, police reported on Tuesday.
According to the FIR, Priya, a woman in her early 30s from Laluwala village under Bhojpur police station, along with her friends, recorded the act and uploaded it on a social media platform linked to Rajiv Singh. The video, widely circulated online, was filmed on Sunday and shows the group beating the cat, which later died. They then doused it in petrol and set it on fire.
The FIR was lodged after forest officials received an email from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Delhi. The footage also captures multiple individuals standing near a bike while assaulting the animal.
The accused have been charged under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which carry a penalty of up to three years in prison and a fine of ₹1 lakh. Moradabad Divisional Forest Officer Suraj Kumar stated that authorities identified Priya after tracing the bike’s registration number from the video. He added that the woman belongs to a nomadic tribe.
However, police have yet to locate Priya. Bhojpur SHO Sharad Malik confirmed that a case has been registered, and despite visiting Laluwala village, the village head was unable to identify the woman. Authorities are continuing efforts to trace her and her accomplices.
