Bhubaneshwar (Odisha): The BJP has announced Mohan Charan Manjhi, a four-time MLA and the party’s tribal representative, as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. This comes after senior state leaders Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram were assigned to the Union government. Manjhi will be supported by two Deputies, KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida. The oath ceremony is set for tomorrow, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expected to attend. PM Modi is also anticipated to lead a roadshow in Bhubaneshwar en route to the Janata Maidan venue.

Manjhi, 52, an MLA from Keonjhar, has built a reputation as a skilled politician. His experience in public service and organizational abilities contributed to his selection, sources reveal. Previously, he served as the BJP’s chief whip in the assembly, making him the youngest candidate among the frontrunners.

KV Singh Deo, a six-time MLA and former royal from Patna (princely state), Bolangir, served as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik administration for nine years until 2009, during the BJP-Biju Janata Dal alliance. Pravati Parida, 57, a first-time MLA, has been with the BJP for 28 years, leading the state BJP women’s wing from 2016 to 2022 and serving as state BJP Vice President from 2022 to 2024.

Choosing the next Chief Minister was a strategic challenge for the BJP, which is forming the government in Odisha for the first time in 24 years after Naveen Patnaik’s rule. The BJP garnered 78 of the 147 assembly seats, securing 51 of those seats. The BJP legislature party made their selections this evening under the oversight of Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Bhupendra Yadav, who acted as observers for the Central leadership.

Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Jual Oram were also present at the meeting held at the state BJP headquarters in Bhubaneshwar. Extensive security measures are in place for tomorrow’s oath ceremony, which is expected to be attended by several dignitaries, including union ministers and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.
