In a spectacular turn of events, Mohammed Shami’s unforgettable drop catch of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 transformed into an awe-inspiring performance, solidifying his position as a game-changer for Team India.

Despite the initial setback of dropping Williamson’s catch, Shami bounced back with a remarkable display of bowling prowess, clinching a stunning 7-wicket haul against New Zealand. His figures of 7/57 not only marked the best figures by an Indian in ODI World Cups but also propelled him to the top of the wicket-taking charts in the ongoing tournament.

Expressing remorse for the dropped catch, Shami acknowledged his error, admitting, “I dropped Williamson’s catch, I shouldn’t have. I felt terrible.” However, his exceptional bowling performance turned the tide in India’s favor, dismantling the New Zealand batting lineup and leading India to a resounding 70-run victory, securing their spot in the World Cup final.

Shami’s stellar achievement included breaking records previously held by stalwarts like Ashish Nehra and Stuart Binny. With a total of 23 scalps in just six matches, he now stands as the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in ODI World Cups, achieving this milestone in a mere 17 innings. His impact has been nothing short of phenomenal, especially considering his limited opportunities in white-ball cricket.

Reflecting on his comeback into the side after Hardik Pandya’s injury, Shami expressed, “I was waiting for my chances. I didn’t play a lot of white-ball cricket. My return started against New Zealand [in Dharamsala].” His resurgence has been a testament to his determination and skill, turning crucial moments in favour of the team.

Shami’s double-wicket over during New Zealand’s chase altered the game’s course, proving to be a pivotal moment. Analyzing his bowling strategy post-match, Shami emphasized the importance of variations while adhering to his belief in pitching it up to claim wickets.

As India gears up to face the winner of the Australia vs South Africa match in the final, Shami’s astounding performance has positioned him as a formidable force, instilling confidence in the team’s pursuit of World Cup glory.
