A 20-year-old Dalit man was reportedly assaulted, abused, and held captive after his bike collided with another motorcycle in UP’s Bhadohi district, police stated on Sunday. Identified as Sangam Lal Gautam, he was returning to his home in Prayagraj’s Handia on March 10 when the incident occurred. Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik said the other rider, Rishabh Pandey, was coming from the wrong direction near the Berwa Paharpur area and crashed into Gautam’s bike, leaving him seriously injured.
Upon learning about Gautam’s caste, Rishabh, along with his father and 10 unidentified men, allegedly started abusing and attacking him with casteist slurs. They accused Gautam of riding under the influence and brutally assaulted him, Manglik told PTI.
The victim was also allegedly taken hostage by Rishabh, who demanded ₹20,000 as compensation for the damage to his bike. After several hours, Gautam managed to contact his father, Narayan Das Gautam, who then alerted emergency services, police added. Gautam was rescued by the police and admitted to a community health center. Based on his complaint filed on March 22, a case was registered at Koirauna police station against Rishabh Pandey, Pawan Pandey, and 10 unidentified persons under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
SP Manglik confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
