Microsoft regains the top position as world’s most valuable company after the stock price of Nvidia dropped by 3.4% on Thursday. Both companies are still well above the $3 trillion mark. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, U.S.-based technology giant Nvidia Corp raced to the top of global market capitalization rankings, surpassing big tech giants like Microsoft and Apple. Nvidia had a market cap of $3.335 trillion on Wednesday, which exceeds the market capitalisation of countries like France, Canada, Germany, and Australia.

But on Thursday, Nvidia’s stock price fell the most despite the announcement by the company that Elon Musk’s xAI is building a supercomputer with thousands of Nvidia chips (H100 GPUs) to make its AI model better. Nvidia’s shares slid by $130.70 billion on Thursday, sending its value down to $3.22 trillion, with Microsoft holding its title in terms of valuation with $3.3 trillion.

With the pre-eminence of AI technology among top tech giants, the demand for chips which train and run AI generative models has increased, which somehow led to the rise in valuation of chip manufacturer companies like Nvidia.

As of now, Nvidia’s shares slipped by 3.54% since the closure of today’s market. Microsoft, on the other hand, slipped just 0.14% before the market closed there. Currently, the market cap of Microsoft Corp is $3.31 trillion as of the market’s close.

Apple is still close behind Microsoft and Nvidia with a market capitalization of $3.22 trillion. Exceptional earnings and growing investor enthusiasm for AI have supported the company’s [Nvidia] meteoric rise. Nvidia’s market value surged from $2 trillion to $3 trillion in just 96 days.

For comparison, Microsoft took 945 days and Apple 1,044 days to make the same leap, according to Bespoke Investment Group. This shows how the demand for microchips led to the growth of Nvidia, which is absolutely phenomenal.
