Meerut’s biggest underground RRTS and Metro station at Begumpul is in its final construction phase and is poised to become a key transit hub. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) plans to make it operational by June.

According to NCRTC CPRO Puneet Vats, “The tracks for both up and down lines have been laid, and the station is nearing completion. Begumpul will be Meerut’s only underground station catering to both Namo Bharat and Metro commuters. It is India’s first project where two transit systems will share the same track, featuring two platforms and four railway tracks for the Rapid Rail Transit Corridor and the city’s metro system.”

While Meerut Metro trains will utilise the station’s platforms, Namo Bharat trains will run on the central tracks. “Covering over 6,000 square meters, the station has been constructed 22 meters underground with four floors. Despite its depth, passenger convenience remains a priority, with 20 escalators planned—13 of which have already been installed. Technical rooms are ready, and key installations such as flooring, air-conditioning ducts, and platform screen doors are in progress. Additionally, CCTV cameras will be installed for real-time monitoring,” Vats added.

Situated in a high-traffic area, Begumpul station will enhance Meerut’s connectivity and facilitate travel to Ghaziabad and Delhi via Namo Bharat trains. Multiple entry and exit points will help manage passenger flow, ease congestion, and provide a smooth transit experience.

Trial runs for the Meerut Metro began in January between Meerut South and Meerut Central at a controlled speed. The metro aims to ease congestion on the Delhi-Meerut route, which links Modinagar, Ghaziabad, and the highway leading to Uttarakhand.

“The Delhi-Meerut road is lined with showrooms, factories, and MSMEs. Currently, commuters rely on UPSRTC buses to reach Delhi, but the Metro will offer a more convenient alternative,” said local resident Parminder Sirohi.

The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, India’s first of its kind, is a joint initiative between the central government (50%) and the state governments of Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan (each holding a 12.5% share). With an estimated cost of ₹30,270 crore, the corridor will reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just 50 minutes. Spanning 82 km, it includes 24 stations—70.5 km elevated and 11.5 km underground. “The project is expected to be fully operational by June 2025,” Vats confirmed.
