MEERUT: A mosque, estimated to be over 150 years old and located in a densely populated area of Meerut city, is being dismantled by members of the minority community following directives from the local district administration. The decision was made to clear the path for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). On Friday, the structure’s gates and windows were removed, according to a mosque committee member.
Meerut’s Additional District Magistrate, Brijesh Kumar Singh, explained, “The Delhi-Meerut road is managed by the Public Works Department (PWD), while the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is constructing the Delhi-Meerut-Ghaziabad RRTS corridor directly beneath the road, where the mosque is situated. Both departments requested its removal to facilitate development work.” He added that discussions regarding compensation are ongoing, and there has been no resistance from the mosque authorities.
Mohd Waseem Khan, a committee member, stated that the mosque was built in 1857 and has been actively serving the community for the past 50 years. He mentioned that NCRTC officials initially assured them the route would be altered, but recently, the district administration directed the PWD to proceed with the mosque’s demolition. “Two days ago, officials informed us that we must either dismantle the mosque ourselves or face forced removal, as it obstructs the RRTS project,” Waseem said.
He further noted that they have not received any official written order yet but are seeking fair compensation, either in the form of land for a new mosque, an alternative constructed mosque, or financial assistance. The mosque has a legal history dating back to 1981 when it was temporarily sealed following a court case. After a Supreme Court ruling, it was reopened and remained functional until the recent demolition order by Uttar Pradesh authorities.
