A 45-year-old woman was arrested in Bijrol village, Baghpat, for allegedly strangling her 15-year-old daughter after catching her talking to her boyfriend on the phone, police reported on Sunday.
The accused, Warisa, allegedly found her daughter, Nazia, speaking to her boyfriend around 3 am on Saturday while preparing for Sehri. In a fit of rage, she strangled Nazia, who collapsed on the bed. Assuming she was still alive, Warisa continued with her household chores, only realizing her daughter had died when she attempted to wake her four hours later, said Baraut SHO Manoj Kumar.
Warisa’s husband, a toy trader, was in Sultanpur at the time. She lived in the village with her nine children. Due to financial difficulties, Nazia had dropped out of school and stayed at home.
Villagers alerted the police after noticing Warisa trying to bury her daughter. Authorities arrived at the scene and arrested her. An FIR under BNS Section 103(1) for murder was registered based on a complaint by a police sub-inspector. The autopsy confirmed that Nazia died due to strangulation, and further investigation is underway, police said.
